We all know the importance of the Poetry Slam. Multiple poets, battling it out for lyrical glory and the perfect 10 marks from the judges, for everything from a book token to a place in the Scottish National Slam Championships. Maker of spoken word careers, breaker of egos and hearts, the slam is an integral and important part of any poetry ‘scene’….
And oh, how infinitely open to satire….. Which is exactly what The Anti-Slam, brain-child of London-based duo Paula Varjack & Dan Simpson do!
In the first of our Takeover Editions, Varjack & Simpson, alongside ten absolutely horrifically bad poets*, compete for the coveted title of ‘Worst Poet’, as decided by an esteemed panel of judges…. We also have the amazing A New International closing the show with a FULL LENGTH SET to get us pertying.
And, those poets are…..
CATHERINE WILSON as INDY SISIVE!!
“Indy isn’t sure if she wants to be a doctor, poet, rapper and unicorn; she hasn’t quite made her mind up yet. She can usually be found listening to whale song, pretending to be a cat and having feelings no one else would ever understand (especially her Mum).”
MAX SCRATCHMANN as DUNCAN MCWHIRTER!
“McWhirter is the Chairman of the Lower Wormit Arts & Cultural Society and the author of Wormit and Roond Aboot and Hey You, Wha, Me?”
RACHEL RANKIN as ELI TISM!!
“Eli is a Shakespeare…enthusiast? snob? who only speaks in (bad) iambic pentameter….”
ALEC BEATTIE as BENNY ‘DEADBEAT’ BLACKTHORN!!
“Benny is the last of the Beat Generation, and despite his name is not dead.”
KATHERINE MCMAHON as KITTY MUFFIN-TOP!!
“A fearless slam poet and sex-positive baker.”
TRACEY S ROSENBERG as KITTY CAT!
TICKLE as BEDWETTER!!
““I got a letter from the government the other day.
Check what the letter said: I’ve got the wetter bed. BEDWETTER”
LARA WILLIAMS as CENT E. MENTAL!!
“Cent E. Mental touches the raw,
beating heart of poetry
with deft and
in the name of love.”
DOUG GARRY as DOUG TRIHARDER!!
“Doug thinks everyone who matters knows who he is…or they don’t, whatever.”
FREDDIE ALEXANDER as @FredRAlexander on Twitter and Instagram!!
“A performer, poet, and activist, who is rapidly gaining notice on Social Media for his politically incisive pieces. His has several viral hits, such as ‘Austerity is Bad’ and ‘Hetero-NO-mativity, and is currently finishing a fully funded MA(Hons) in English Literature.”
Judging them will be Rachel McCrum as Broad, Jenny Lindsay as Rally, and Andrew Blair as the Former Godfather of Scottish Spoken Word. Bram E Gieben is is in the role of Scorekeeper and Rule Book Master, with Dan and Paula compering.
Come along to cheer for the best BAD poet, be entertained, take part in our Anti Raffle and dance the night away with A New International! (“They’re rather good you know,” – Everyone Who Has Seen and Heard Them.)
It’s our penultimate event of 2016, fair Edina! Come play with us. xx
*(NB: It takes great skill to be this bad – and that’s the point. 😉 )
