Six Questions For…. JO CLIFFORD!

Jo Clifford is known as one of Scotland’s leading playwrights. She has written about 80 performed scripts in just about every dramatic medium, some of which have been performed all over the world. Rally & Broad are delighted to welcome her to our Glasgow stage this month on Sunday 24 April. Tickets here!  Josephine Sillars interviews her below!

JoClifford

  1. As well as being one of Scotland’s leading playwrights, you are also an actress, poet and teacher! Which medium are you the most comfortable in (and is there anything you can’t do?)

I’m rubbish at football. And weightlifting is not my strong point. Of the things you list that I can do, I love doing all of them…I guess because acting/performing was something I was blocked in for about 40 years, I feel I have to catch up a lot of lost time. And get the hugest satisfaction and pleasure from…

Rally & Broad Masterclass Showcase!

The Masterclasses!

In Spring 2016, Rally & Broad ran two weekend long masterclasses at the Scottish Poetry Library, with two of the most acclaimed poet-performers working in the UK today – Francesca Beard and Ross Sutherland.

The aim was to respond to a call for development for spoken word, poetry and performance in Scotland, to provide opportunities for artists from all backgrounds to explore new ways of presenting and writing for the stage, and to learn from some of the best around. In February, Francesca’s workshop focussed on ways to explore, clarify and expand the onstage persona, how we engage with audiences, and how to develop ideas into full blown shows. In April, Ross looked at turning traditional notions of spoken word upside down and inside out; of fraying the edges of the poem and letting them bleed into areas of broadcasting, videopoetry, installations and even conceptual art. A LOT of fun was had by all…

The Event!

On Thursday 14 April, we’re delighted to present short performances from the participants, showcasing some of the new skills and explorations that they took away from the weekends. It’s a cornucopia of exciting new voices in Scotland – come and see what they’ve got!

Put on your red shoes, you pretty things, and let’s dance with the sailors. We could be heroes. We can be heroes. April’s Rally & Broad is celebrating all of our heroes – not just Bowie, although we loved him dearly. Those leggings from Labyrinth were responsible for all sorts of awakenings chez Rally and chez Broad, not to mention a lifetime’s education in eyeshadow application. But sometimes, it’s time to raise a glass and salute our heroes, inspirations and aspirations…

Joining us onstage, all heroes in their own right!
