Playing ukeles with fencing foils and reading Harry Potter upside down…how far Rally & Broad has come from those innocent halycon days of 2012… 🙂

Oh, lads, this is it. THE VERY LAST RALLY & BROAD, IN GLASGOWTOWN. Come and say hello, say goodbye? It’s been a beautiful four years, and we are thankful to each and everyone who has made it so special. We’d love to see you one last time, for spraffling, waffling and raffling galore.

An Announcement from Rally & Broad HQ

Dearest folks,

We hope this finds you very well. This is a very special announcement from Rally & Broad Towers!

Over the past four years, Rally & Broad has been showcasing the best of Scotland-based spoken word, new authors, new voices and more lyrical delight and musical goodness than we could possibly quantify, and we have been utterly delighted to do so.

But, ladies and gentlemen, it befalls us this fair morning to announce that this will be the last ever Season of Rally & Broad. Our June shows in Edinburgh and Glasgow will see Rally & Broad’s last cabarets – and we’re going out with a BANG!

We have seen Rally & Broad grow from humble beginnings at the Counting House in 2012 to stellar monthly shows in Edinburgh, Glasgow and further afield; growing our wonderful team; delighting in seeing the audiences come back month after month; and being so thrilled to be able to provide a platform to some of the best Scottish and international artists out there. We’ve laughed, cried, swooned, and eaten a lot of biscuits along the way. It’s been wonderful.

R&BJan3

We wouldn’t change a single thing about the last four years (except that night we did shots of cherry bourbon after the December 2014 show. Brutal, brutal times….), but the time has come to hang up our matching kimonos and say adieu to Rally & Broad. We want to bring Rally & Broad to a glorious close, riding high. We – Jenny Lindsay and Rachel McCrum – will both be pursuing different passions in and for the spoken word scene in Scotland, which we so thoroughly adore. Also, Broad and Rally would dearly love to go for a long walk up a beautiful hill before lying down in the long grass to eat peaches (for a few years, at least).

However! We ain’t going quietly, ladsour final shows are absolute firecrackers!

Phew! Well. Aye. There you go. So. Aye.

We’d like to thank you, lovely, awesome audiences; everyone who has ever performed on the Rally & Broad stage; and our wonderful R&B team for all your support over the last four years. We couldn’t have done it without you; we wouldn’t have dreamed that we could. It’s been quite a time, lads, quite a time.

Please do come join us and toast Rally & Broad, and all who have sailed in her. We hope to see you at some of the last shows.

All our love. All  of it. Really.

Coorie-In Land, Hogmanay 2016.

Rally & Broad were delighted to be curating one of the Scot:Lands venues for 1st January 2016. A wonderful – and free – series of events that run on the cold, dreich afternoon of the first day of the New Year, providing solace, shelter, and beautiful, uplifting music, poetry, dance, performance art and more to the good peoples of Edinburgh and further afield. We themed our ‘land’ as ‘Coorie-In Land’ celebrating all things cosy and warm. Hence the pyjamas…

Our artists for the afternoon included Maud the Moth, Colin McGuire, Rachel Amey, Billy Liar, Skye Reynolds, A New International (Biff Smith and Caroline Evens), Calum Rodger and Hailey Beavis.

Also performing although not pictured as they were doing sterling work out in the Cafe space were performance artists Rose Ruane and Rebecca Green.

January in Edinburgh…The Hangover Special!

Friday 22nd January 2016, 7 – 10pm at The Bongo Club. Tickets available in advance (and cheaper!) here or £6 on the door.

[this is an unusual show, with two spaces being used simultaneously, so we’re asking everyone to arrive on time. Tickets in advance may be advisable!]

And lo, January was upon us, and so were the mighty mighty hangovers of a helluva year. Think we’re getting out of our PJ’s anytime soon? Think on…

C36A2277

January brings with it two more of our ever popular Hangover Specials, where we celebrate all things fizzy, grotty and comfy. Just in time to set you up for the New Year. In Edinburgh, however, as we’ve been striving to do all year, we’re shaking it up like a raccoon in a whiskey barrel…

We’ll be curating two ssimultaneous spaces in the Bongo Club on the 22nd January, Rally’s room and Broad’s room, with very special acts in each and the audience swapping halfway through the night. The story goes that Rally & Broad have managed to lose their shoes, their memories and each other over the course of the night, and are trying to piece it all together…

Come help us do it! Along with some uplifting beats, beautiful dance and soothing, witty words to cure all ills from the likes of…

…BE CHARLOTTE!

BeC

Multi-instrumentalist and astonishing vocalist whose live performances are applauded across the Scottish music scene and beyond. She blew oor little minds with her talent – and multi coloured light up trainers – in Glasgow last year, and we’re so excited to see what she’ll bring to Edinburgh this month.

Ryan Van Winkle

Edinburgh-based poet Ryan Van Winkle. Picture: Phil Wilkinson

Award-winning poet whose most recent collection The Good Dark (Penned in the Margins) was awarded the Saltire Society Award for Poetry in 2015. Hurrah! So very much deserved for a man who has worked tirelessly to develop poetry in Scotland and across the world, with the Scottish Poetry Library, culturelaser podcast, his award winning solo shows including Viewmaster (with Dan Gorman) and red like our room used to feel, and of course, the glorious and chaotic triumph that was The Golden Hour. We salute you.

…COLIN MCGUIRE!

ColinMcGuire

Poet and performer whose recent work explores bed, sleep, mortality and legacy and (in oor humble) is one of the most exciting, unabashedly individual, curious and idiosyncratic voices in the Scottish spoken word scene. He’ll be in his jammies too, by the way. Just sayin.’*

…RUTH MILLS!

RuthMills
One of Scotland’s leading dancers, choreographers and movement directors whose provocative, intelligent work has seen her work with other artists in many disciplines; we’re delighted to have Ruth back with a specially devised piece for the show.

Because the Night… – Rally & Broad 50th Show! With The Mental Health Foundation.

Rally & Broad ‘Because the Night’ – Friday 15th May, The Bongo Club, Edinburgh. With Aidan Moffat, Kathryn Joseph, Anneliese Mackintosh, McGuire and Liz Cronin. Doors at 730pm, £5.

…belongs to us…

Flickr

This month marks our 50th event since those heady, hectic begininings in October 2012 and to celebrate that, and many other things beside, Because The Night! pulls together some of our most favourite past acts alongside newcomers to the R&B stage!

In both Edinburgh and Glasgow we’ll be celebrating The Night with the help of excellent line-ups, and in Edinburgh, an extra-special partnership gig in collaboration with the Mental Health Foundation and the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival.

Because The Night! (Edinburgh) is simultaneously a sparkling line-up of utterly delicious lyrical delight to celebrate the Night (that is, the show, the show, our 50th show!) as well as being a celebration of using the arts to address the stigma of ill mental health.

With…

AIDAN MOFFAT!

AidanMoffat

Prolific and multi-talented Scottish songwriter in a special spoken word set. You know it all…Arab Strap, Mogwai collaborations, the collaborations with everyone left, right and centre, Lucky Pierre and a children’s book with Cargo Publishers, ‘The Lavender Blue Dress. So. Much. We are excited.

KATHRYN JOSEPH!

KathrynJoseph

Prodigiously talented and criminally underrated; Kathryn is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. Her voice possesses the other-worldly quality comparable to Ms Newsom and Björk; but she is by no means of an ilk. With songs from new album ‘bones you have thrown me and blood I have spilled.’

Bruised and yet beautiful, down but not out, her wonderful, visceral songs knocked King Tut’s for six. She is the real thing.” **** (The Herald)

ANNELIESE MACKINTOSH!

AnnelieseMackintosh

Author of highly acclaimed Any Other Mouth (Freight Books) and captivating live reader, Mackintosh returns to the R&B stage. We’re thrilled to see her again.

And Voted Top 10 inThe Readers’ 10 Best Books Of The Year So Far, The Guardian.

MCGUIRE!

McGuire

McGuire’s first full collection “As I sit quietly, I begin to smell burning” is a wild mixture of poetry and short stories. In the spirit of verging on discovering catastrophe, the collection displays McGuire’s tendency toward the confessional, the social-realistic and absurd. Expect a live performance confronting Scottish cultural life, perversion, identity, masculinity and addiction.

LIZ CRONIN!

LizCronin

Edinburgh-based songwriter and lyricist whose songs about love, life and sorrow are simultaneously heart-breaking and hilarious. An R&B favourite and for very good reason!
